Reflection on Gods presence in our lives

Today I decided to post a bit of a different reflection than the usual weekly Gospel reflection to which I have limited myself lately. This is a bit more a personal reflection, and I want to reference the following passage from the book of Exodus (14:10-15):
When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them; and they were in great fear. And the people of Israel cried out to the LORD; […] And Moses said to the people, "Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be still." The LORD said to Moses, "Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward.
The last few weeks, since the exams, have been very busy and varied. There was some outstanding work to catch up on, mainly related to video editing etc. There were also some friends to visit and even an ordination, and there were some new projects to try and kick into action, for example the new website of the Dominicanfriars.ie. This resulted, experientially, in a feeling of running around all the time, literally and figural as I have spend a good few nights away from the priory, without realizing many tangible results…

But last week I also had some very interesting conversations. In one of them we started a discussion about the experience of God in this life… This was not a question I felt able to even attempt to answer while running around myself and feeling that God did not seem to be present in what I was doing at all. I personally felt that I was like the Israelites being chased by the Egyptians… even though God was in the cloud before me, it did not seem to make a difference to the scene I was focusing on behind me!

So when this question came, and long time readers of my blog might remember that I wrote a bit about the intimacy in prayer some time ago, I needed to actually stand still and first actually recollect myself. Our relation with God is a very personal one, and I belief that the only way to really give a witness to the amazing relationship we can have with God is by trying to express our own experience. Words are always going to fall short of anything that has to do with the relationship between God and ourselves, but at least by dwelling from our own inmost experience it seem to me that it is at least on the way…

So for me came the moment to “"Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD”. Last week I was away for a few days and it was then that it happened; it was a moment in which time froze and the dust in the desert slowly settled. I had to realize that the pillar of fire wrapped in smoke is before me, guiding the way, and to take my attention away from the army that comes up behind me! It made me realize that even though I had the best intentions in what I was doing, it is very easy to forget to realize that God is always actively involved in everything that we do. It is not necessarily that I forget about God by not thinking about Him, but I forget by not having God at the center of my life at all time…

This brings me back to the experience of God in our daily lives. It seems to me that we have to find where God is in our lives, how we walk with Him. This experience seems to be, in my eyes, like the experience of a whole new reality opening up around us, a reality which makes you tremble in awe, the heart burn like fire… This is, I think, little foretaste of the full experience of real love, with a reality which can only be found in God.

That topic in particular was aroused recently as well, but that is maybe for another day as it is time to shut the computer down!

Well, I guess I even got a bit of the topic "Love the Lord your God with all your heart". But it is really in love that the secret of our relationship with God is to be found. This is the fire that burns in our heart
