The archbishop of Dublin, Most Rev Diarmuid Martin, ordained Fr Denis Murphy OP and Fr Maurice Colgan OP during the celebration of Mass which was attended by many Dominican friars, family and friends of the two brothers and parishioners of Dominick Street parish. God leads us in the right way...

This week just a very quick note, as I left writing the reflection a bit to late... hopefully I get a chance to write a bit a longer post in the coming week; I intend to follow up on my reflection on my vocation, especially now all is 'back to normal' and classes have started.

I guess that although there are possibly multiple themes in this Sunday's Gospel, what stands out is the contrast on the response to God's call between the officials and the people. The man in the parable, with two sons, asks both sons to do some work in the vineyard. Whereas the first doesn't feel like it and voices this, he goes anyway after reflection and does the fathers will. The second however gives an affirmative answer, but does not go.

Two brothers ordained priests

A bit late, but I just want to put up a few pictures of the Ordination of Fr. Denis Murphy OP and Fr. Maurice Colgan OP. The ordinations took place last Sunday. It has been a very blessed time for the Irish Province with the celebration of three priestly ordinations, three solemn professions, two simple professions and six men who have started their novitiate and received th habit in the last month!

The archbishop lays hands on Brothers Denis and Maurice.

Thanks to Fr. Gerard Dunne OP for the pictures!

My religious vocation... (4)

This will be my final brief reflection on my short series on my vocation. I am still struggling in wording what I really want to say, and as such might become a bitt repetitive. I guess it is only a fool who tries to describe what love is...

So I will make a final analogy, that falling in love with God seems to me, in my experience, not that dissimilar with falling in love with any other person. But in particular it seems that it is an experience which is not that dissimilar from falling in love with somebody who answers this love. I just wanted to indicate the contrast between the experience of observing somebody, or meeting somebody, and experience a sudden fancy, sometimes maybe described as feeling 'butterflies', and a deep mutual love. The mutual love between two people is much deeper than this initial sensual experience, and so is the love with God. Actually, in the case of God it is unique, as God always loves us, and as such it is the love of God for us which we can answer to. Love for God is automatically mutual. God loved us first, and God always loves us.

God is full of mercy!

On the Gospel of Matthew 18:21-35

Peter asks Jesus how often he should forgive his brother if he sins against him, and suggests seven times. Jesus however answers that he should forgive not just seven times, but seventy seven times, a whole new dimension of magnitude. This is illustrated by the parable Jesus puts before his disciples, which shows the abundant love for God for us.

My religious vocation... (3)

There is not that much time left for number three of my reflections on my vocation. The time until all method of communication will go in retreat mode is coming very close... suspended for the week!

My intention was to elaborate a small bit on the day-by-day living out of my vocation. There seems to be two aspects of our relationship with God. The one is the supernatural, the great encounter and the deep communion which I have tried to describe in my previous posts. Closeness to God can be seen as a deep grounding, a feeling of belonging, of something being 'right' which settles deep down in our soul. This disposition is not something which easily changes, even if things are not always going the way we like them.

Ordination Fr. Brian Doyle OP

Yesterday Fr. Brian Doyle OP was ordination to the priesthood. Fr Brian was ordained in the church of Saint Catherine, Murrintown, Co. Wexford. The bishop of Ferns, Dr Denis Brennan ordained Fr Brian. This is the first of three priestly ordinations for the Irish Dominicans during the month of September as our brothers Maurice Colgan OP and Denis Murphy OP will also be ordained priests in two weeks time.
